Happy New Years! I hope and believe that 2019 can be a phenomenal year in business. The slate is clean. And you get to start writing your business story for the year. I LOVE this time of year!
If you’re anything like me, your head is full of ideas and you’ve got a mental project list that seems to grow each day as you think of some new idea that could be amazing for your business. But let me give you some REALLY, REALLY good advice.
It’s time to focus. You’ll achieve more in your business in 2019 by trying to master less things at once. I always have a million ideas. I can’t pursue them all at once. So when you are trying to take your goals from the idea space and into generating results, here’s some helpful tips.
- Make sure you selected the right goals to start with. Don’t pursue every idea that pops into your head. Take time to look at what you really want MOST. You won’t win 20 races this year. You’ll win a couple. So make sure you are only pursuing the things that you REALLY want. Don’t be the Jack of all trades master of none! Pick your wins.
- Break down your goal into benchmarks. Quarterly, monthly, weekly and even daily benchmarks will ensure that you hit the target.
- Track your goals! If you can’t keep track of your progress, it’s likely you won’t make it out of the first quarter this year!
- Create accountability. Top secret goals are the precursor to failures! If you are coming off of a public failure, it’s REALLY hard to want to set another public goal. But it has to be that way. You have to be accountable to someone other than just you. Because when the times get tough, you are the same person that lets you wallow in self pity. You need someone who will push you back into the ring.
- What do you need to learn? This one is so simple, and yet so magical. Whenever I have a goal, after I map it out, I ask myself, “What do I need to learn to be able to accomplish this?” And then I make a list of any missing skills. Assuming I know everything I need in order to accomplish my goals is arrogant and unwise. Of course I don’t know everything! If I did, I’d already have the goal!
- Find the right course, teacher, internship or program that will teach you what you need to know. It’s January 1st, and I’ve already signed up for a conference, and found the 3 programs I will take this year. In addition to my mastermind. I have my year mapped out for what I will be learning and when I’m going to implement.
Protect yourself from perpetual student mode with strong implementation. Don’t even get me started on my pet peeve of the perpetual student. I can’t stand watching entrepreneurs waste their time, energy and resources by taking course after course without ever implementing. I have a rule that I don’t take more than one course at a time. And I don’t move on to another course until I’ve implemented the skills I learned in the first one.- WHO do you need on your team to help you accomplish this goal? You don’t have to do it all by yourself. You’ll get there faster and easier with the right help in place! So identify your hiring needs and get busy finding those people!
Setting the goal is the easy part! Making sure you hit the goal is going to take more strategy and effort! But you’ve got this. 2019 is looking good! I can’t wait to hear about your goals and successes!
I’m hosting a week long event called Resolutions to Results. I’ll take you through the process of creating the action plan to support you achieving your goals. If you’d like to join us click here!
